India’s First Mpox Case Confirmed , Patient Stable in Delhi Hospital
A 26-year-old man from Hisar, Haryana, was taken to the hospital on Saturday. On Monday, doctors confirmed that he had mpox (earlier called monkeypox).
India’s first mpox patient, diagnosed on Monday, is being kept in isolation at a special facility in Delhi’s Lok Nayak Hospital and is getting treatment, said health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday.
The health ministry said that this is just one case, and there is no immediate danger to the public. The man had recently traveled to a country where mpox is spreading. Right now, he is in a special hospital and is stable, with no other serious health issues.
On Tuesday, Bharadwaj visited the hospital to check on preparations for treating both dengue and mpox. He assured everyone that there is no need to worry, as mpox only spreads through close contact.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) for the second time in two years on August 14.
