3 Initiatives Launched by Education Ministry to Promote Multilingualism
The National Education Policy 2020 encourages learning mother tongues or regional languages in addition to other languages, hence promoting multilingualism in Indian education.
To realize this vision of National Education Policy 2020, during the concluding session of the “UGC Workshop on Writing Textbooks in Bharatiya Bhasha for Higher Education”, Shri K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, unveiled three major initiatives namely ASMITA, Bahubhasha Shabdkosh, and Real-time Translation Architecture.
In five years, ASMITA, under the direction of UGC and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, plans to publish 22,000 books in 22 scheduled languages.
Bahubhasha Shabdkosh, by CIIL with Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, aims to establish a comprehensive multilingual dictionary repository.
The goal of NETF and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti’s Real-time Translation Architecture is to create a framework for improving real-time translation in Bharatiya Bhasha.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 promotes multilingualism in Indian education by encouraging the learning of mother tongues or regional languages alongside other languages.
