About BOI Domestic and NRO Accounts
A domestic bank account is a bank account that is opened in India and is used for financial transactions and management within the national boundaries.
NRO Account’s full form is Non Resident Ordinary Account. This type of bank account allows the Non Resident Indians to receive funds in either Indian or foreign currency.
While domestic bank accounts generally charge nominal customer fees, NRO bank accounts may charge higher fees.
Meaning of Callable and Non Callable FDs
Customers with Domestic and NRO accounts can choose two types of FDs, i.e., callable fixed deposits and non callable fixed deposits.
Callable FD meaning can be described as a fixed deposit that allows investors to withdraw their deposit before it reaches the maturity date.
On the other hand, Non Callable FD meaning can be described as a fixed deposit that cannot be withdrawn before it reaches the maturity date. Before the Reserve Bank of India introduced non callable FDs in 2015, all FDs were callable.
Usually, when a callable fixed deposit is withdrawn, the investor has to pay some amount as a penalty. A non callable may be withdrawn only in certain circumstances such as death of depositor, bankruptcy or a court of order.
